About Us

The Harriet Tubman Resource Centre Digital Archive is an initiative of the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on the Global Migrations of African Peoples at York University.

The Institute's mandate is to promote a greater understanding of the history of slavery and its legacy: it is dedicated to capturing, studying, and telling the story of the forced and voluntary migration of African peoples around the globe, from centuries ago to the present day.

The Institute searches the world for materials that help us know and understand this history—from official and personal documents to photographs, interviews and maps. It established the Harriet Tubman Resource Centre to house its growing collection of African Diaspora materials and the Digital Archive reflects the ongoing efforts of the Institute to share the information it finds and collects by digitizing them when possible and making them available online.
